About the contest

The AMC 8 is a program of the Mathematical Association of America.

The AMC 8 is a great way to introduce younger students to mathematical problem-solving beyond the standard school curriculum. Students who enjoy the AMC 8 may want to continue with the AMC 10 and AMC 12 in later years.

Description:
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute competition designed for students in grade 8 and below. The competition focuses on middle school mathematics topics, including counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry (including the Pythagorean Theorem), spatial visualization, and interpreting graphs and tables. Some of the later questions may touch on beginning algebra topics, such as linear or quadratic functions and coordinate geometry.

For: Middle school students in grades 8 and below, with a maximum age of under 15.5 years on the day of the competition.

When: Annually in January over the course of a week. Students may only take the AMC 8 once each year.

About the location

The contest will be held in the Robert Scott Small building at 175 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC. Parking is available in a nearby parking deck at 89 St. Philip St.

The Maybank building is right at the corner of Calhoun Street and St. Philip Street. The RSS building is next to it. Please enter RSS through the main doors. Go to the front side of the building, which faces Maybank. Go up the outside steps (which can be slippery) and enter through the big glass doors. Go up one more flight of stairs to the 3rd floor and follow the signs.

There are handicap-accessible doors on the back of RSS. Contact us if you need to use them.

It is recommended that you arrive downtown about 30 to 40 minutes early, so that you have time to find parking and find the building. It will take a few minutes to fill out some forms just before the contest begins.

We hope you’ll stick around and tour our beautiful campus and enjoy downtown Charleston!
